Hashane Abey – Class of 2019
Hello, my name is Hashane Abeyagunawardene. I am 17 years old and going into my senior year of high school. I do track, cross country and occasionally road races. I started running 5 years ago and ever since I started, I’ve always enjoyed it. Right from the start, I became really interested in running and set goals for myself. One of the main reasons why I love to run is because of the hard work and dedication it takes to do it. It takes lots of time and a strong work ethic to run. I like the feeling of accomplishment and whenever you work hard, you get accomplishment. Being around people with the same mindset makes it easier to achieve goals and makes it enjoyable.
Besides running, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and learning and exploring new things. I also want to give back to my community and like to volunteer. I am very thankful to live in such a great city and I like to give back to it by volunteering. Another thing that I like to do is to cook. I’ve always done it since I was little and I enjoy making different types of food for my family and friends.
Whenever I’m older, I want to become a sports medicine physician. I have always been fascinated how the body works and with running, I have gotten a better understanding of what happens to the body when you run. I work hard at school everyday so I can reach this goal when I’m older. A quote I always remember in school and during running is,”Work for what you want because it won’t come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it in to something positive”-Leah Labelle.
I’m very glad with how far I’ve gotten in running so far. There have been ups and downs but I have always persevered at the end. I wouldn’t be able to do it without my family, teammates/friends, and coaches. My family is always supportive and they inspire me to be a better person every day. My friends and teammates have always been very motivating and help me strive to become better at running. I enjoy going to practice everyday with people that are willing to work hard and have the determination to get better. I am also very thankful to have a coach that cares and is dedicated to making me become better at running. He always makes sure that I am improving and has taught me important life lessons. I am excited for what is yet to come in life!
